Keepit.com

Keepit.com provides an online backup service that stands from the rest when it comes to ease of use and price.

Keepit.com backs up your files on a daily basis, by saving incremental backups, and keeps a full backup version for 30 days. By doing so, the amount of information transferred from the client computer to Keepit.com’s servers is small enough to provide a nice user experiece.

Keepit.com’s software works on Windows based PCs and will detect by itself the paths or directories commonly used by Windows to store user files, which include the Documents and Settings, My Documents, My Pictures and My Received Files on Windows XP systems and the Users folder and subfolders on Vista systems. As an additional feature, users can select other sources of data to be backed up, such as other folders where the user stores personal information or different paths on extra hard drives. All this has to be set up only once (the first time the Keepit.com client is run) and the rest of the process is fully automated.

To store users’ data, Keepit.com uses two datacenters in Europe and keeps the user uploaded information syncronized among them. By doing so, Keepit.com is adding an extra layer of redundancy, as even if one datacenter becomes offline, you’ll still be able to get your files from the second one. All data stored in Keepit.com’s server is encrypted using Rjindael encryption which provides top privacy protection.

For an extra layer of security, a private key is used on the users’ end to decrypt files and access them online, this private key has to be kept in a secure place where it can easily be recovered in case it’s lost. If there’s no way for the user to recover his private key, Keepit.com’s staff will issue a replacement key after some offline checklists are applied, which can take up to 10 days, so it’s important you always keep a hard copy of your private key in a safe pace.

Keepit.com currently has 2 service plans, the first for the private user with unlimited space for just $4.95 a month. The second one is a Pro one and allows the user to backup more than one computer. The Pro plan has a price of $3.95 a month plus $0.50 per Gb of online storage and which also works with Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 server editions. Keepit.com also offers a 30 day money back guarantee, so it’s pretty safe to test drive their services.
