Backup Freeware
Freeware refers to software that is available free of charge, so everyone can download it or get it on a CD for free (sometimes, shipping and media costs for CDs will be applied, but not for the software included). The term “freeware” comes from “Free Software” using free as in “free beer” or without cost, but that doesn’t imply freedom to do whatever you want with it, some freeware products have redistribution limitations or won’t allow you to modify them. However it’s also important to note that some freeware products are free for certain purposes but require a commercial license for other uses. For an instance, a software may be freely available and free to use on a home computer, but if you want to use the same software on a business environment then you have to get a commercial license which will have a price. It’s not that bad, let’s keep in mind that developers also have expenses and that they are doing a lot by providing their products for free under certain circumstances.
It’s important to know the differences between freeware and shareware, as it’s common to find both kind of software on the same download sites. Shareware will allow you to test drive the program but will have some limitations such as disabled functions or time limits (the software will become useless after some days) and you have to buy a commercial license in order to keep using it (usually delivered as a serial number or activation code that can be entered in the program itself to unlock it).
Once we have understood what freeware, then we can easily understand that backup freeware is exactly the same as free backup software, or software that can be used to create and restore backups and that doesn’t have any direct cost associated to it.
Backup freeware is available for almost every single operating system and can be freely downloaded from huge file distribution sites such as Cnet or Softonic. However it’s hard to know which one will be right for you, so the best way is to download one and try it, if it doesn’t meet your needs, then uninstall it and move to the next one. When downloading freeware, it’s important to use a reliable download site, as it has happened that there have been some “free download” sites that include adware (software that will constantly display ads in your computer) or other malware with their downloads.
If after trying a few freeware products you still can’t find the right one, then you must move to commercial products, some of them are so cheap nowadays that it won’t really hurt your personal finances to get a license and by doing so, you’ll also have access to commercial grade support, something that is usually lacking on backup freeware.
